INSURANCE

We require all guests to have comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance. We highly recommend that you also secure travel insurance. We work closely with Global Rescue and have used their services to evacuate guests. Mongolia is an “at your own risk” travel destination. You will be in an extremely remote location with limited communication and quite far from adequate medical care facilities. Our teams are highly experienced, but please come prepared for wilderness travel conditions.

LODGING

All guests share double-accommodation hotel rooms in UB. Two anglers share double accommodation at the fishing camps and other ger camps

BOOKING

We request a 50%, non-refundable advance payment to hold your reservation and payment in full at least 120 days prior to departure.

FISHING ADVENTURES: CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY

This river was the first in Mongolia to be legally designated catch-and-release, single-barbless hook for all international anglers. We insist that all clients practice catch-and-release using single, barbless hooks.

FLIGHTS

Mongolia is surprisingly easy to reach. Ulaanbaatar (UBN) is served by regularly scheduled direct flights from Seoul, Beijing, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Moscow, and Tokyo. We are more than happy to help answer questions regarding the best routing from your home.

VISAS

Please inquire with us regarding visa regulations. Most international visitors, including persons from the USA, EU countries, and Japan do not currently require a visa prior to arrival in Mongolia. However, there are exceptions.  We will request a scanned copy of your passport at the time of booking. We have a fully staffed, full-time office in Ulaanbaatar. Our team can easily facilitate any necessary visa process.

WEATHER

In Mongolia, the climate is strongly continental, with long and frigid winters, and short and warm summers: the temperature range between winter and summer is definitely wide. Evenings are cool year-round. However, Mongolia’s weather can change quickly with rain or even snow possible any month. Our camps are well-outfitted for chilly weather with plenty of cozy, wood-burning stoves.

Precipitation is scarce and is concentrated in summer when the country is partly affected by the Asian monsoon; in winter, when a thermal high-pressure system dominates, the sky is often clear and a beautiful blue. Precipitation is more abundant in the north, where it exceeds 300 millimeters (12 inches) per year, while in the south, which is desert, it drops below 200 mm (8 in) per year.

The climate in Mongolia is often unpredictable, so from year to year, there may be significant variations in temperature and precipitation.

The weather in fishing season is generally dry but can change quickly with local thunderstorms. There might be rain or even snow, but it’s far more likely that September days will be sunny and warm (60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, or 15 to 20 C)

PACKING LISTS

We provide guests with a comprehensive packing list prior to departure. For fishing trips, guests are responsible for bringing their fishing gear. For other adventure trips, we will provide a specific packing list.

PERMITS

Every year Government of Mongolia determines how many licenses are permitted to fish. Approximately 500 licenses are granted every year. For fishing, all international anglers must obtain permits to legally fish in Mongolia.

The permits are issued by the national government. The Ministry of Environment’s logo will appear on the permit. The permit will state the valid fishing dates and location. Your name will appear on the permit. Each fishing license costs approximately USD$ 400.

Private persons cannot purchase fishing permits directly. All such permits are allocated to a handful of government-endorsed outfitters, which are also committing themselves to protecting rivers and fish. International anglers are required to book with an endorsed outfitter. The outfitter then secures the taimen permit on behalf of the angler.

There are also many unknown companies and individuals advertising low-cost trips, you can almost be certain you will be fishing illegally. A foreign angler caught without proper permits faces fines, immediate confiscation of all fishing equipment, expulsion and fines.

TRAVEL SAFETY

Please note that the Mongolian people are strong and proud people with a culture steeped in tolerance to those different from themselves. They are friendly to westerners and the nomads are willing to share what little they have. This is a safe country to travel in. We are especially respectful of hosting families. The nomads offer rides on camels, horses, and reindeer, often to observe beautiful scenery or locate rare members of specific cultures. Historical edifices and museums are also readily available.
